BARBED WIRE

VSWA172_MIA-American Classic-Barbedwire

In 1867 Barbed Wire makes its debut and officially is born! June 25th it celebrates another birthday!

It has been called a lot of things from that SOB that just pricked me to Devil’s Rope it has been part of American history from its inception, seen in the Wild Wild West to the trench warfare of the First World War and has had more uses and applications than those seen in Mr Slattery’s Book on 12,000 uses of the ordinary rope and oh what a read it is. Even Amazon cannot keep copies in stock!

It has become so ingrained in American culture that barbed wire has been adorned as tattoos and seen on a canvas of a variety of shapes, colors and designs. Below are just a very small sampling of the barbed wire tats worn.

Barbed wire, also known as barb wire, less often bob wire or, in the southeastern United States, bobbed wire, is a type of steel fencing wire constructed with sharp edges or points arranged at intervals along the strand(s). It is used to construct inexpensive fences and is used atop walls surrounding secured property. It is also a major feature of the fortifications in trench warfare (as a wire obstacle).

A person or animal trying to pass through or over barbed wire will suffer discomfort and possibly injury. Barbed wire fencing requires only fence posts, wire, and fixing devices such as staples. It is simple to construct and quick to erect, even by an unskilled person.

The first patent in the United States for barbed wire was issued in 1867 to Lucien B. Smith of Kent, Ohio, who is regarded as the inventor. (source: Wikipedia)

Each of these American classics are important icons of their day!
